As the early minutes of the fourth quarter ticked away, neither Tarris Reed nor Frazier Ott were on the floor. The Red Devil coaching staff made the decisive effort to play a small-ball lineup. It was no slight to the Chaminade big men; instead it was more about competing with the small and quick lineup of SLU High. That decision paid off – CCP 58 SLUH 48.

The game started slow, with SLUH up 11-9 after the fist quarter. A back-and-forth second quarter ended with Chaminade going into halftime 28-26 after a late second quarter 3 by Matteus Case. Chaminade’s shooting guard was the leading scorer with 14, 9 of those points coming from beyond the arc. The Canadian native got his other 5 points from the free throw line. He played very efficiently.

Chaminade’s second leading scorer, Harrison Vickers, had 13. He found success driving to the basket and either getting the foul call or finishing at the rim. The senior guard went 5-7 from the free throw line and had 4 field goals.

Rounding out the top three scorers, Luke Kasubke finished with 11 points, 4 of which came off of two transition dunks that drew a roar from the crowd. The K-State signee also knocked down a 3 and had multiple mid-range jump shots to contribute to the win. Forcing multiple SLUH turnovers, Kasubke played solid defense.

Chaminade found success running in transition and playing a quick paced style offense, which explains the small ball lineup. They were at their best when they were forcing turnovers, scoring transition baskets, and getting back on D. It was here where the SLUH offense really couldn’t keep up.

Friday night’s game was a wrap on 2020 MCC play… sort of. Chaminade and SLUH are in the same district, which is hosted at SLUH, so it is very possible that they meet for a third and final time to determine the district winner. Kirkwood and Webster Groves are the other two teams in CCP’s district. The district tournament will be next week, Tuesday and Thursday at SLUH.

Overall Record: 17-6

Final MCC Record: 5-3
