Archbishop Carlson Calls Off Spring Sports

Mark Scott

In a letter to the Archdiocese, Archbishop Carlson wrote that online learning will extend through the end of the school year.

“In light of continued developments in the COVID-19 situation throughout the Archdiocese of St. Louis and new guidance from government and health officials, the Archdiocese of St. Louis elementary and high schools—including all grades pre-K through 12—will continue distance learning for the remainder of the school year.”

This decision came shortly after Missouri Governor Mike Parsons ordered Missouri schools to be closed for the remainder of the school year.

The letter also included that all extra-curricular activities and athletics will also remain suspended/canceled.

“All in-person classes will remain suspended throughout that time, and extra-curricular activities and athletics should continue to be postponed/canceled, including graduation ceremonies.”

Though it is not official, it is almost certain that the remainder of the spring sports seasons will be canceled.

Seniors have been stripped of their final high school sports games, and the memories that would have been made with them.

“The brotherhood at Chaminade is real and it is like my second home. I have been a competitive athlete since a little kid and to have it cut short is just something that is hard to comprehend.” Said Max Powers

Max is the senior captain of the rugby team. Along with Rugby, Max also played football for all four years of high school.

“I am super bummed I can’t play my senior season, but for me personally I got to end last year on a high note… I just can’t help but feel bad for the seniors that play lacrosse, rugby, or even basketball that were going to really make an impact this year,” said Phil Mullen

Last year as a junior, Phil helped lead the Volleyball team to a state championship. This accomplishment made bad news hurt a little less.

Despite the sad times that the seniors are going through currently, they have a new and exciting journey to embark on… College.

Though the circumstances will change, the Chaminade Brotherhood has no boundaries or limitations. The Chaminade class of 2020 will forever be brothers.
