When you see the Red Army, you might see something that you did not notice before. The painted bodies and the drums are always there, but there are also some new additions this year. Most notably, a flag reading, “All Gas No Brakes.”
Senior Connor Moore has led the charge, saying that “The All Gas No Brakes flag was kind of my own gimmick that I did for the soccer team just for fun. It stuck and now it’s its own little great thing.”
Mr. Shaver did raise a little bit of criticism for the flag, saying “I do not understand their purpose in relation to high school sports.”
Besides the flag, another new part of the Red Army is tailgating, once again, headed by Connor Moore.
He said, “I talked to some of my friends and people in our grade and like before any big college game, we wanted to tailgate.”
So far, Chaminade students have tailgated before three games this year, with hope for more to come.
This is not just the varsity level games too. Mr. Shaver said, “I witnessed a group of upperclassmen choose to come to a C-team soccer game and form a student section to support the freshmen on the field.”
Moore is certainly responsible for this surge in school spirit around campus.
When asked what motivates him to lead, he said “I honestly just loved Chaminade sports and sharing my energy in the Red Army as an underclassman, so this year I decided to just kind of step up and so far, it has worked out.”
To continue this version of the Red Army, Mr. Shaver said to “Stay the course with the team on the field/the court. Be there to support those guys, not to tear down the opposing school’s players.”
As the Red Army and Chaminade Athletics as a whole has gotten off to a hot start to this school year, the Red Devils still need your support in all that they do. As Chaminade football, soccer, swimming, and cross country are soon to make their attacks for state championships, the Red Army will be all the more important as we make our way through fall sports.
