The Chaminade Swim and Dive Team is coming off a very successful year, finishing 3rd overall in the Missouri State Championship. This year, they strive to place even higher with the goal to win state. We will get to know four Chaminade Swimmers and their goals for the season.
Tommy Fichter, a junior in the Meyer House, has been swimming for 8 years. He specializes in the 100m fly, 100m back, and 500m free. His personal goals for this season are to make the finals (1-8) in the 100m fly and (9-16) in the 100m backstroke and 500m freestyle.
For a team goal, Tommy states he is aiming for “going undefeated and being in the top three in the state.”
Cormac Ward, a senior in the Meyer House, has been swimming since he was 5 years old. Ward specializes in any freestyle event, but specifically the 100m and 200m.
Ward says his expectations for the team are “to be competitive at every championship meet we have this year… go undefeated in dual meets. If the team races well, we have a good shot of winning MCCs, and the biggest goal of the season is to place first as a team at state.”
Michael Purcell, a junior in the Gray House, has been swimming since 5th grade. He specializes in the 50m, 100m, and 200m freestyle.
Purcell’s thoughts on this year’s team are consistent with the others. He stated, “I think Chaminade has a really strong team this year. We have several strong freestylers and backstrokers, which should get our relays into a top 5 or even podium finish at State. We have a chance at winning the regional championship at Columbia, Missouri, and I’m positive we will win our conference and go undefeated for our record. I’m excited to see how we do at state. If we have a good meet, then we are in contention for a state title.”
Finally, Colin Cunneen, a sophomore in the Gray House, has been swimming for ten years. Colin specializes in the 100m and 200m backstroke.
Cunneen says that he is “expecting a lot of growth and hopefully a state championship for the team.”
This year’s Chaminade Swim and Dive team has high expectations. I know that I will be looking forward to seeing how the team performs. I hope that you will too.
