College Football is officially back! And with college football comes sitting on the couch all day, watching your top 10 team lose, and constantly getting hate from your rival.
To summarize the first few weeks of college football: a national championship contender, Clemson, is now 1-3, the preseason favorite to win the Big 12, Kansas State, is now 1-3, and Georgia-Tennessee was football cinema.
The chaos just keeps getting crazier this weekend, with multiple ranked matchups and possible upsets incoming. I’ll be asking the Chaminade student body who they think will win the games this weekend. The games I’ll be covering are:
#21 USC @ #23 Illinois
#22 Notre Dame @ Arkansas
#4 LSU @ #13 Ole Miss
Auburn @ #9 Texas A&M
#6 Oregon @ #3 Penn State
#17 Alabama @ #5 Georgia
Kicking off at 11:00 on FOX is undefeated #23 USC going on the road to #21 Illinois, who just came off an embarrassing loss at Indiana. USC is favored in this game -6.5, and something tells me that Illinois could very well get another whipping this week. It’s safe to say that most of the Chaminade students think that as well. Chaminade football wide receiver Kai Robinson says, “Ja’Kobi Lane is gonna go off.” Just returning to practice this week, the junior is looking forward to having a breakout game.
Also kicking off at 11:00 am is #22 Notre Dame @ unranked Arkansas. A matchup that on paper looks like it should be all Notre Dame, considering Arkansas just lost to Memphis last week. However, in my opinion, I’ve seen very bad Arkansas teams pulling off crazy upsets the past few years, and this Notre Dame team seems down, so anything could happen. Notre Dame is only favored by -4.5. However, the majority of the student body says otherwise, including senior Chaminade football lineman Kaveon “K-dogg” Mitchell, who says, “I got Notre Dame cause my boy J-love is gonna go crazy, I played against him freshman year.”
Kicking off at 2:30 pm on ABC is the first big game of the day: #4 LSU @ #13 Ole Miss. A very even matchup, Ole Miss being favored by only -1.5. In my opinion I think LSU has got a loaded team this year, and Garrett Nussmeier is my favorite to win the Heisman. And to add on to this crazy matchup, there’s a bit of drama going into this game. It turns out the daughter of Lane Kiffin, the Ole Miss head coach, is dating an LSU linebacker. Talk about drama. As senior Chaminade football lineman Will Strothmann says, “Lane Kiffin could be very motivated to do well this week or he could be ticked off that he forgets how to coach.” Well said. Here’s who the students voted for for this matchup:
Another SEC matchup kicking off at 2:30 on ABC is unranked Auburn @ #9 Texas A&M. Auburn, just coming off a tough loss at Oklahoma, is looking to rebound and get a win, but it doesn’t get much easier as they have to go to the home of the 12th man. It’s going to be difficult, but it’s doable for Auburn. However, I’m going to have to go with the -6.5 point favorite Aggies, and so does the majority of Chaminade.
Now for the first of two huge games later in the day, #6 Oregon goes to #3 Penn State to experience the white-out. This is also a very even game as Penn State is only favored by -3.5, which I think is a little generous. I will be going with Oregon to upset the Nittany Lions because I think Penn State is one of the most overrated college football teams in the past 10 years. Chaminade football player Cameron Falb disagrees with me, saying blatantly, “It’s white out. Penn State.” Well said, I guess. Here’s who the student body thinks will prevail:
And now for the best, most anticipated game of the day, of the week, potentially of the year, it’s #17 Alabama going to Athens to take on the Bulldogs of #5 Georgia. This is a must-watch football game. I feel bad for anyone who’s getting married at this time. Alabama vs Georgia last year gave us football cinema, will they do it again this year? The Bulldogs are -3.5 point favorites, but that doesn’t seem to matter to Chaminade senior football players Kai Robinson and K-dogg, who both pick Alabama, saying “My boy Ryan Williams is all they need” and, with a beautiful Pat McAfee impression, “Gimmie Alabama!” Georgia hasn’t lost a game at home in 3 years, but that could change this Saturday.
After this Saturday’s games, we’ll see if the Chaminade students really know ball. I think they have a good chance of pulling a Lee Corso and going 6 for 6 on the day, but we’ll find out this weekend.
