Mr. Black, A Man of Many Trades

Mr. Black, A Man of Many Trades

I’m sure you’ve heard the expression one trick pony. Well, Chaminade teacher Mr. Black is the opposite of that. Mr. Black worked plenty of jobs before finally becoming a teacher at Chaminade. He’s worked at a shoe store, been a baker, and an actor just to name a few. From this he has learned what makes a good job good and what to avoid at a job.

One early job that Mr. Black enjoyed was working for the City of Glendale public works, where he paved concrete, fixed potholes, and mowed grass. He liked this job because he was able to work outside, which is not very common nowadays. But he also enjoyed this job because the work was rewarding. This is something important for Mr. Black in a job: he felt good making the city a better place and getting paid for it. Also, he enjoyed being around his coworkers which made working a lot more fun.

Also, Mr. Black has appeared as an actor in 2 movies, Black Hole and Meet Bill. Black Hole was shot downtown, and it was a bad, low budget movie. Despite it being a bad movie Mr. Black said it was still fun; he got to meet good people and hang out with them for 4 days. Meet Bill was a more high quality and high budget movie, but Mr. Black didn’t like it as much because the other people were pretentious and thought they were movie stars.

One of the other small jobs Mr. Black has had was as a shoe store employee. He worked this job right after high school and said he didn’t enjoy it because his boss was mean and took the fun out of the job. He was also a baker at a bakery, but he didn’t like this job for a number of reasons. He didn’t like this job mainly because he had to get there so early in the morning, but he also didn’t like the repetitive work and not being able to talk to a lot of people.

To wrap up I asked Mr. Black if he had the choice to go back and do any of these previous jobs instead of teaching would he? He said he would go back to his job at Scottrade. At Scottrade he taught people how to do their jobs depending on what they were joining the company to do. At this job he was his own boss and liked his co-workers. So, Mr. Black has more experience in teaching than you may have thought, just not teaching highschoolers.
