Chaminade’s all-school musical, Urinetown—yes, that is the title—plays at the Siefert Theatre in the Skip from February 12-14. To fully understand the show, you must get through the title.
Urinetown (the musical, not the place) is a satirical musical set in a dystopian future. The central conceit of the show is that people must pay to pee in public restrooms because a corrupt corporation, Urine Good Company, run by Caldwell B. Cladwell, wants to maintain water usage. If the people don’t obey, they will get sent to Urinetown—a mysterious, metaphorical place. Bobby Strong is a worker at Public Amenity #9—one of the poorest and filthiest urinals in town—and he looks to his heart so he and the rest of the poor people might stand up to Cladwell’s tyranny.
Urinetown frequently parodies and references other Broadway musicals throughout the show, including Les Misérables and West Side Story. Alongside being a fun and melodramatic representation of musical theatre, the show incorporates various political undertones, with capitalism and environmentalism being key factors in the plot.
Jake Young ’28 (Hot Blades Harry) states, “The premise of the show is very goofy, but the strong emotions, acting, and singing from the cast are what make it amazing and bring it to life. I can’t wait to see the finished product of the show, and I know that everyone will enjoy it!” Jake has loved spending time with his castmates and getting to know them over the past month of rehearsing.
Ethan McDaniel ’26 (Cladwell) says, “Playing Mr. Cladwell is different than anything I’ve ever done with CCP Drama. It has been a hard, but certainly fun, challenge to develop a certain voice for the evil character.”
CCP Drama has also welcomed parents and alumni to a special Date Night at the Theatre on February 12th (the opening night of the show). This includes exclusive pre-show appetizers and drinks, as well as a cast Q&A! Check out the Chaminade Parent Club social media for more information.
