“We all believe in each other and believe we can get that state title.” – Tommy Fair ‘26
Coming off a second-place finish in last year’s state final vs DeSmet and led by senior captains Tyler “Toots” Williamson and Bobby “Gasser” Gassoff, the Chaminade Hockey Red Devils are looking to rebound and win state. They certainly have made the push with some great MCC wins early to start the season versus CBC and Vianney (5-1 and 8-0) respectively.
A team that just fell short of the goal last year described their feeling as “Hungry.” Charlie Mineman, ’27, had this to say when asked about the team, “[We’re] feeling good, obviously we are hungry… hungry for the championship, big games last week, should’ve gone 3-0, but it is progress nonetheless.”
Williamson says the team has a “chip on its shoulder” and “fire in our belly” when asked about falling short of the title last year. They have certainly been playing that way and we can only hope that it continues that way.
Star senior Eric Ewing leads the team in points with 10 (6 G, 4 A). Tommy Fair follows with 8 points (3 G, 5 A). Perhaps the best story of the team so far is the goaltender Colin McNamee, ’27, racking up two shutouts and only averaging giving up a goal per game.
The team’s other goalie, Nick Skorubskiy, ’28, is also having a great season so far posting a 1.50 Goals Against Average in 2 starts. A very impressive start to the season for the netminders.
Another great storyline for the Chaminade Red Devils is the play of freshman Beckham Billmeyer in his first two games. Beckham recorded a goal and an assist in his first game against Kirkwood and then repeated that performance with another assist against CBC.
The team’s next game is against MCC opponent SLUH. The first meeting ended in a 2-2 tie . The boys will look to win convincingly as they have against Vianney and CBC.
If the team continues to play the way they have, beating up on MCC opponents, we have a very great chance of seeing them playing at Centene Ice Center for the state title.
