When you hear about what some people do at Chaminade, you think that it might be quite a bit. Some people play sports and are in clubs as well, and when you throw that in with school and homework, you don’t think that there is any chance of somebody having any time to do anything else.
Chaminade hockey recently won the Challenge Cup on the back of a Gio Avenevoli overtime winner. These extra games meant more time at the rink and less time to do anything. Despite this, Chaminade hockey remains one of the school’s smartest programs.
Junior defenseman Desmond Allman is one of these players. Along with playing hockey for the Red Devils, Allman plays club hockey for the St. Louis AAA 18U Blues as well as being a full-time student.
When asked how he handles all that he does, Allman replied by saying, “I manage all 3 by getting my homework done at school while I can so that I can get to sleep at a good time. I also make sure that I complete the work that I miss while out of town when I’m traveling back home so that I can get caught up on my missed assignments.”
Another player for Chaminade is Charlie Mineman. Mineman does even more than Allman. Mineman plays for Chaminade, St. Louis AAA 16U Blues, the Tri-City Storm of the USHL, and has had stints with the United States National Development Program.
Mineman says that the key is focus when you have all these things going on at once: “I always seem to feel locked in and it is almost like a must for me to get things done. If I were not to be locked in, I don’t think I would be able get done what I need to.”
Mineman also added that discipline is paramount with his schedule. He added, “I think that discipline helps me in all different aspects of life and not just hockey and school. With discipline I think I can get anything done.”
Despite having some of the busiest schedules, Chaminade hockey is always able to keep up with the demands from their teachers, coaches, and lives. They have been able to train themselves to be able to handle it, then go out onto the ice and perform to the highest of their abilities.
